National Conservation Land- The Gunnison Gorge

The Gunnison Gorge is one unit of BLM’s special landscapes that make up the National Conservation Lands. Located about seven miles northeast of Montrose, just downstream from the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, The Gunnison Gorge offers opportunities for recreation, solitude, wildlife viewing, exploring, scientific research, and a variety of other tradtional uses such as; fishing, kayaking, camping, and hiking. This land offers a variety of different options for camping.

  • Non-Wilderness River Camping- There are designated river campsites, including the Cottonwood Grove campground, which has six campsites, with one ADA accessible site. Designated river campsites can be found on BLM maps and signs. For sites downstream of Gunnison Forks the maximum stay is six nights and seven days.
  • Dispersed Vehicle Camping- Camping away from developed recreation facilities is allowed in the National Conservation Land for up to six nights as long as it does not conflict with other authorized users or areas posted “closed to camping.” Dispersed camp sites are located along most secondary roads and may not be marked.  Popular locations can be recognized by the telltale flat disturbed area that has been used as a campsite before. For more camping information you can check BLM maps, signs, and wesbite.
  • Day-Use/Day Camping Recreation Sites- If you’re not looking to spend the night somewhere, you can spend time “day camping” between sunrise and sunset in these areas. You can not enter or remain in these day-use areas before sunrise or after sunset. Popular day-use areas include the Gunnison Forks Recreation Area and Smith Fork Canyon.
