A number of local shops offer gently used clothing. Larger chain stores such as Walmart, Target, JCPenney, Marshalls, Natural Grocers, and Ross offer shopping and grocery options. We also have some great outdoor shops that sell outdoor gear, clothing, and more.

With all of these big town amenities, you don’t need to go far. It makes a quick trip to the store easy. A wide variety of restaurants and places to eat provide a lot of options. Montrose also offers a variety of lodging options. Places like bed and breakfasts, hotels, and Air BnBs are available for visiting friends and family.

Even with all of these amenities and options available, Montrose still has more of a friendly, small-town feel. People here get to know their neighbors. Communities are more tight-knit. There are all sorts of activities as well as things to do and places to go that really bring people together. The population of Montrose is just over 19,00 and the population for Montrose County is a little over 41,000. For a town of our size, we have a lot to offer and new places, people, and things are always moving in! Montrose County is 2,243 square miles and reaches all the way to the Utah border. That’s a lot of space to explore!

“Stay Here, Play Everywhere”

When you live in Montrose, you have easy access to so many great areas on the Western Slope of Colorado! Located just 20 minutes outside of Montrose is Black Canyon National Park. The Black Canyon is a year-round destination for many residents throughout the area. During the summer months, it is popular for scenic drives, hiking, climbing, bicycling, and is also a popular photography spot. In the winter, certain roads in the Black Canyon close and become trails for skiing and snowshoeing.

In the city of Montrose, a wide variety of trails and paths take you throughout the city, through various parks, and along the Uncompahgre River. Ridgway State Park with the Ridgway Reservoir is located just down the road. The Ridgway Reservoir is a large reservoir popular for boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, and swimming. This destination is not far from Montrose and offers great views of the San Juan Mountains.

Just down a little further and you’ll hit the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. You can even see these mountains from the city of Montrose. The San Juan Mountains have hundreds and hundreds of miles of trails for hiking, biking, off-roading, snowshoeing, skiing, and other activities. Located in these mountains are towns such as Silverton, Ouray, and Telluride. These mountain towns are close enough to take a little day trip to or even just to spend an evening.

Other popular places to visit around Montrose include the West Elk Mountains around Crested Butte and Grand Mesa near Grand Junction. Montrose is also not too far from Moab, Utah and the Rimrocker Trail is an OHV trail that starts in Montrose and goes to Moab. The Montrose airport also provides many direct flights to a wide variety of cities around the United States, making it easier to visit other locations as well as friends and family in other areas.

Not only is Montrose close to many amazing areas, but Montrose has a lot of things to do no matter the time of year. Many free and paid events take place throughout the year in the Montrose area. There are theaters, art exhibits, museums, classes, gyms, a new recreation center, and so much more in Montrose!
